Sportsbooks That Support Ethereum (ETH)

Ethereum (ETH) Overview

Ethereum (ETH) is the native cryptocurrency of Ethereum, a decentralised blockchain platform conceived by Vitalik Buterin in 2013 and launched on July 30, 2015. Rather than focusing primarily on digital payments, Ethereum expanded the idea behind Bitcoin by allowing developers to build programmable smart contracts and decentralised applications directly on a blockchain.

That approach helped Ethereum become the foundation for a huge blockchain ecosystem covering decentralised finance, stablecoins, NFTs, gaming and thousands of other applications. ETH sits at the centre of that ecosystem, serving both as a transferable cryptocurrency and the asset used to pay transaction fees, commonly known as gas.

One of the biggest changes in Ethereum’s history came in September 2022 with The Merge. The network abandoned the Proof-of-Work mining system it had used since launch and moved permanently to Proof-of-Stake, with validators staking ETH to help secure and operate the blockchain. Ethereum estimates the change reduced its energy consumption by approximately 99.95%.

Unlike Bitcoin, ETH does not have a fixed maximum supply. New ETH is issued to validators, while part of the transaction fees paid by users is permanently burned. The balance between new issuance and burning determines whether the overall ETH supply increases or decreases over a given period.

Ethereum also has a major presence in crypto sports betting. ETH has been accepted by crypto gambling operators for years and remains one of the established currencies available for sportsbook deposits and withdrawals. Sportsbet.io, for example, currently supports native ETH deposits over Ethereum, alongside ERC-20 tokens operating on the same network.

Its wider importance to crypto betting goes beyond ETH itself. Ethereum established the ERC-20 token standard and became home to assets widely used for gambling payments, including stablecoins. As a result, Ethereum has played an important role in the development of the broader crypto payments infrastructure now used across online sportsbooks.

Advantages of Using Ethereum (ETH)

Ethereum’s maturity, widespread adoption and extensive wallet infrastructure give ETH several advantages as a sportsbook payment option.

  • Widespread sportsbook support – ETH is one of the most established cryptocurrencies in online betting and is accepted by a broad range of crypto sportsbooks, giving bettors considerably more choice than many smaller altcoins.
  • Excellent wallet support – Ethereum is supported by virtually every major cryptocurrency wallet, alongside dedicated EVM-compatible wallets such as MetaMask. Bettors have plenty of options for maintaining control of their ETH outside a sportsbook.
  • Highly established network – Ethereum has been operating since 2015 and secures one of the largest blockchain ecosystems in cryptocurrency. Bettors aren’t relying on a recently launched or lightly used network when transferring funds.
  • Strong exchange liquidity – ETH is one of the world’s most actively traded cryptocurrencies and is available across major exchanges. This makes buying, selling or converting sportsbook funds relatively straightforward.
  • Multiple transfer options through the Ethereum ecosystem – Ethereum’s wider ecosystem includes Layer 2 networks designed to provide cheaper and faster transactions. Where a sportsbook supports these networks, bettors can potentially avoid the higher costs associated with transfers directly on Ethereum Mainnet.
  • Extensive stablecoin infrastructure – Ethereum is also the original home of the ERC-20 token standard used by major stablecoins such as USDT and USDC. Familiarity with Ethereum wallets and addresses can therefore be useful beyond ETH itself when using crypto sportsbooks.

Drawbacks of Using Ethereum (ETH)

Ethereum is one of the most widely supported cryptocurrencies for sportsbook payments, but using ETH directly can have some notable disadvantages compared with lower-cost networks and stablecoins.

  • Higher transaction fees – Ethereum Mainnet can be relatively expensive when network demand increases. For bettors making smaller deposits or withdrawals, gas fees can represent a meaningful percentage of the amount being transferred.
  • Gas fees require ETH – Ethereum transaction fees are paid in ETH. This isn’t an issue when transferring ETH itself, but it becomes relevant across the wider Ethereum sportsbook ecosystem: someone holding an ERC-20 stablecoin such as USDT may still need ETH in their wallet to pay the gas required to move it.
  • Price volatility – ETH can move substantially in value against fiat currencies. A sportsbook bankroll held in ETH therefore has exposure to Ethereum’s market price as well as the results of the bets being placed.
  • Network choice can become complicated – Ethereum’s scaling ecosystem now includes multiple Layer 2 networks alongside Ethereum Mainnet. While this can provide cheaper transfers, sportsbook support varies by network, so an operator accepting ETH does not necessarily support every Ethereum-based transfer option.
  • Mainnet is less attractive for frequent small transfers – Ethereum remains highly capable as a settlement network, but bettors regularly depositing or withdrawing relatively small amounts may find cheaper networks more practical. This is one reason Layer 2 networks have become increasingly important within the Ethereum ecosystem.
