Sandbox (SAND) Overview
The Sandbox (SAND) is an ERC-20 utility token created for The Sandbox, a blockchain-based virtual world where users can build experiences and buy, sell or use digital assets. SAND functions as the ecosystem’s main currency and is used for activities including purchasing LAND and other assets, accessing certain experiences, staking and participating in governance. Its maximum supply is fixed at three billion tokens.
Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum or Avalanche, SAND does not operate its own blockchain. It was originally issued on Ethereum and can also be moved to Polygon through The Sandbox Bridge. The Sandbox has increasingly used Polygon for its own platform transactions because it offers lower fees and faster processing than Ethereum has traditionally provided.
For sports bettors, SAND’s original gaming and metaverse utility is largely separate from its use as a payment method. Where a sportsbook accepts the token, SAND can be transferred from a compatible wallet, deposited into a betting account and potentially used for withdrawals. However, sportsbook support remains considerably more limited than it is for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and major stablecoins.
Network compatibility is particularly important when depositing SAND. Ethereum SAND and Polygon SAND are not interchangeable unless the receiving platform supports the chosen network. Users should copy the deposit address directly from the sportsbook cashier, confirm whether Ethereum or Polygon is required and avoid assuming that an identical-looking wallet address makes both networks compatible. Blockchain transfers generally cannot be reversed if SAND is sent through an unsupported network.
Advantages of Using Sandbox (SAND)
SAND can provide a practical sportsbook payment option for bettors who already own the token or participate in The Sandbox ecosystem. Its compatibility with established blockchain networks also means it can be stored and transferred using widely available cryptocurrency wallets.
- Strong wallet compatibility – As an ERC-20 token, SAND is supported by many wallets that work with Ethereum-compatible networks. This makes it relatively accessible for users who already manage tokens through wallets such as MetaMask.
- Polygon provides a lower-cost option – SAND can operate on Polygon as well as Ethereum. Polygon was integrated into The Sandbox specifically to provide faster transactions and lower gas fees, which can make smaller transfers more practical when the receiving sportsbook supports Polygon SAND.
- Established exchange availability – SAND is available through numerous major cryptocurrency exchanges. Bettors who receive a SAND withdrawal therefore have several potential options for storing, exchanging or selling the token.
- Useful for existing SAND holders – Someone who already owns SAND may be able to deposit it directly rather than first exchanging it for Bitcoin, a stablecoin or another sportsbook-supported cryptocurrency. This can remove an additional trade and its associated exchange costs.
- Broader utility outside betting – SAND can also be used within The Sandbox for marketplace purchases, LAND, digital assets, staking and governance. This gives the token a purpose beyond sportsbook deposits and withdrawals.
Drawbacks of Using Sandbox (SAND)
The main limitations of using SAND for sports betting are its relatively narrow sportsbook adoption and the possibility of confusion between its Ethereum and Polygon versions. It is also a volatile utility token rather than a stablecoin designed to maintain a fixed value.
- Limited sportsbook support – SAND is accepted by considerably fewer sportsbooks than Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, USDT or USDC. Bettors who specifically want to use SAND will therefore have a smaller selection of compatible operators.
- Ethereum and Polygon can be confused – SAND exists across more than one network. Sending Polygon SAND to a sportsbook that only accepts the Ethereum version, or doing the reverse, could result in the funds being delayed or permanently lost.
- A separate token may be required for network fees – SAND itself does not ordinarily pay the blockchain transaction fee. Ethereum transfers require ETH for gas, while Polygon transactions generally require POL. Users cannot necessarily send the SAND held in a self-custody wallet unless they also possess the appropriate network token. The Sandbox discontinued its own “Pay Gas Fees in SAND” feature in January 2025.
- Ethereum costs can fluctuate – Transferring ERC-20 SAND on Ethereum requires a smart-contract transaction rather than a basic transfer of ETH. Although Ethereum fees vary with network conditions, moving a relatively small amount of SAND may sometimes be less economical than using Polygon or a cryptocurrency with its own inexpensive payment network.
- Price volatility – The value of SAND can move substantially according to cryptocurrency market conditions and interest in The Sandbox ecosystem. A bettor’s balance could therefore rise or fall in fiat-currency terms independently of their betting results.
