Dai (DAI) Overview

Dai (DAI) is a crypto-backed stablecoin designed to maintain a value close to one US dollar. It was introduced through MakerDAO and the Maker Protocol, which became an important part of Ethereum’s early decentralized finance ecosystem. Unlike cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, DAI is designed primarily to provide a relatively stable way of holding and transferring value rather than appreciating through a limited supply.

DAI operates as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. Historically, DAI could be generated by depositing approved crypto assets as collateral into Maker Protocol smart contracts, allowing the stablecoin to operate without relying solely on traditional fiat reserves held in a bank. Maker subsequently rebranded as the Sky Ecosystem in 2024 and introduced USDS as the upgraded successor to DAI, although DAI continues to exist and remains transferable.

For sports bettors, DAI’s main attraction is price stability. Someone depositing DAI does not face the same level of price volatility as they would when holding BTC, ETH or other non-stable cryptocurrencies in their sportsbook balance. Its long history within Ethereum and the wider DeFi ecosystem also means DAI has established wallet and exchange support.

DAI can therefore provide a useful middle ground for bettors who want to use cryptocurrency without exposing their betting balance to the price movements associated with more volatile assets. However, because its primary network is Ethereum, transaction costs can vary considerably depending on network activity, potentially making smaller transfers less economical.

As with any sportsbook deposit, users should check the exact network supported before transferring DAI. A sportsbook listing DAI does not necessarily mean every network or bridged version of the token is supported, and sending funds using an incompatible network can result in the deposit not being credited.

Advantages of Using Dai (DAI)

Dai can work particularly well for sportsbook payments because it combines the relative price stability of a US dollar-pegged stablecoin with blockchain-based transfers. For bettors who want to keep their gambling funds in crypto without exposing their balance to the price movements of assets such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, DAI can be a useful alternative.

  • Stable value – DAI is designed to maintain a value close to $1. This makes it easier for bettors to understand the value of deposits, wagers and withdrawals without constantly accounting for cryptocurrency price movements.
  • Reduced volatility risk – Unlike BTC, ETH or other non-stable cryptocurrencies, DAI should not normally experience large price swings while funds are sitting in a sportsbook account.
  • Useful for managing a betting bankroll – Because DAI is dollar-pegged, tracking profits, losses and bankroll size can be simpler than when betting with a cryptocurrency whose fiat value changes continuously.
  • Established Ethereum token – DAI has existed since 2017 and has become one of the better-established decentralized stablecoins, with support across a broad range of wallets, exchanges and DeFi applications.
  • No conversion needed for existing DAI holders – Bettors who already hold DAI can deposit directly at sportsbooks supporting it rather than converting their balance into another cryptocurrency first.
  • Multiple network options can reduce costs – Although DAI originated on Ethereum, some platforms support DAI transfers through additional networks. Where a sportsbook offers these options, bettors may be able to avoid the higher transaction costs sometimes associated with Ethereum mainnet.

Drawbacks of Using Dai (DAI)

Dai provides much greater price stability than cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, but there are still drawbacks when using it for sportsbook payments. Transaction costs, sportsbook support and the changing position of DAI within the wider Sky ecosystem are all worth considering.

  • Ethereum fees can be expensive – DAI is an ERC-20 token on Ethereum, where transaction fees can increase significantly during periods of high network activity. This can make smaller sportsbook deposits and withdrawals less economical.
  • Limited sportsbook support – DAI is not as widely accepted by crypto sportsbooks as Bitcoin, Ethereum or major stablecoins such as USDT and USDC. Bettors may therefore need to convert their DAI before using certain platforms.
  • Stablecoins can lose their peg – DAI is designed to remain close to $1, but that value is not guaranteed. Market conditions can cause DAI to trade above or below its intended dollar peg.
  • More complex backing mechanism – DAI’s stability depends on an underlying system of collateral and smart contracts rather than simply being a digital representation of dollars. This introduces additional protocol and collateral risks that users of a stablecoin should understand.
  • DAI is undergoing a wider transition – MakerDAO has rebranded to Sky, with USDS introduced as an upgraded stablecoin alongside DAI. DAI remains available, but its longer-term role within the ecosystem is less straightforward than it once was.
  • Network selection can cause confusion – Some sportsbooks and wallets support DAI through networks other than Ethereum. Bettors need to make sure both sides support the exact same network before transferring funds, as choosing an incompatible network can result in funds not being credited.
